Bikeride through SecondLife

First demonstration of a low-budget hometrainer coupled to SecondLife on local festival

People can work for hours behind a PC. After official working hours, also a lot of time can be spent using the PC to relax or divert. Sitting still behind a screen is not necessarily the most healty thing to do....

Graphical artist Marc Otte got the idea to connect fitness equipment to the popular program SecondLife, in order to fight the lack of exercise of computer-users. SecondLife is a virtual 3D world connected through the internet, in which users can roam, chat, shop and build things.

Marc Otte asked Edwin Dertien of 'Kunst- en Techniekwerk' (art- and technology works) to build a couple of prototypes of computer-enabled fitness machines. Marc Otte himself is a SecondLife enthousiast, and experiments with its uses for for example promoting his graphical artwork. Edwin Dertien is mucisian and technician, and specialises in designing the technology that makes art 'work'...

A first demonstration to the general audience was held at the 'Balenfestival' from 17 till 20'th of May. Visitors were allowed to drive around on the bikes, both virtual and in real world simultaneously. Also appropriate beverages and snacks were being served.

The technology and more info is being presented on the website http://www.sl-fitness.com. In the near future the release of kits for conversion of existing fitness-equipment is being planned.
