Paralyzed Oregon St. baseball player moves again with implant

LONDON – After Rob Summers was paralyzed below the chest in a car accident in 2006, his doctors told him he would never stand again. They were wrong.

 Despite intensive physical therapy for three years, Summers’ condition hadn’t improved. So in 2009, doctors implanted an electrical stimulator onto the lining of his spinal cord to try waking up his damaged nervous system. Within days, Summers, 25, stood without help. Months later, he wiggled his toes, moved his knees, ankles and hips, and was able to take a few steps on a treadmill.

Doctors weigh in on sports drinks and children

In case you weren’t sure, a recent study confirms what many of us have thought about sports drinks and children.Sports and energy drinks are advertised everywhere as the perfect alternative to gaining more power. Thats great, but they forget to mention the large amount of sugar, carbs and calories that come along with that extra jolt of energy. Should kids be drinking these high-energy beverages? Probably not.

A report published Monday discusses the harm in children filling up with overly caffeinated beverages. I agree that kids should stay away from calorie-containing beverages and stick to regular ol H20.

Conference on Kinesiology and Exercise Sciences

The 7th Annual International Conference on Kinesiology and Exercise Sciences will be held from the 27th to the 30th of June in Athens, Greece. The conference is in collaboration with the Panhellenic Association for Sports Economists and Managers (PASEM) and Panhellenic Association of Fitness and Health Clubs. The conference aims to bring together scholars and students from all areas of applied and integrated health sciences, including physiology, health psychology, health promotion, epidemiology, biomechanics, sports medicine, training methods, nutrition and physical education. Txt2stop helping smokers to quit smoking faster

A new study has found that sending motivational and supportive text messages to people, who are trying to give up smoking, can doubled their quit rates.

These were the findings of the txt2stop trial led by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

The study examined the long-term effects of specially designed text messages by testing the levels of cotinine found in participants’ saliva after they reported they had stopped smoking for six months.

A total of 5,800 smokers were randomly allocated to the txt2stop programme or a control group.
