Dr. Paul Donohue: Three tests can be used to diagnose diabetes

Dear Dr. Donohue: I have a friend whose glucose tests taken in the morning range from 140 (7.8) to 200 (11) and are never in the normal range. He is constantly thirsty and has other diabetes symptoms. His doctor ordered a hemoglobin A1C test, which came back as 5.2. The doctor told him that they no longer do the fasting blood sugar test, only the HbA1C, and that he is not diabetic, since his test is normal. Should my friend consult another doctor?

Dear L.P.: Up until 2010, doctors diagnosed diabetes on the basis of blood sugar. A relatively new test, hemoglobin A1C, HbA1C or just A1C, has been added to the criteria for both diagnosing diabetes and monitoring diabetes control in the past three or four months.

‘Love your body’ to lose weight

Researchers from the Technical University of Lisbon and Bangor University enrolled overweight and obese women on a year-long weight loss program. Half the women were given general health information about good nutrition, stress management, and the importance of looking after yourself. The other half attended 30 weekly group sessions (the intervention plan) where issues such as exercise, emotional eating, improving body image and the recognition of, and how to overcome, personal barriers to weight loss and lapses from the diet were discussed.

On the behavioral intervention plan women found that the way they thought about their body improved and that concerns about body shape and size were reduced.
