Doctors weigh in on sports drinks and children

In case you weren’t sure, a recent study confirms what many of us have thought about sports drinks and children.Sports and energy drinks are advertised everywhere as the perfect alternative to gaining more power. Thats great, but they forget to mention the large amount of sugar, carbs and calories that come along with that extra jolt of energy. Should kids be drinking these high-energy beverages? Probably not.

A report published Monday discusses the harm in children filling up with overly caffeinated beverages. I agree that kids should stay away from calorie-containing beverages and stick to regular ol H20.

Here are some of my Drink This: Not That suggestions for popular sports and energy drinks:

Drink: Flavored Soda Water (0 calories, 0 sugar) Not: Red Bull (110 calories, 27 grams of sugar)

Drink: Unsweetened Iced Tea (0 calories, 0 carbs, naturally caffeinated) Not: Gatorade (25 calories, 7 carbs)

Drink: Milk (skim: 90 calories, 13 grams sugar) Not: Monster (100 calories, 27 sugars)

Drink: Water (0 calories, 0 carbs, 0 sugar) Not: PowerAde (120 calories, 30 carbs)
